WD1003A-RA2
User Guide
The WD1003A-RA2 controller is designed to interface with up to two
floppy disk drives and up to two Winchester ST506/ST412 RLL type hard
disk drives in an IBM PC AT or compatible system and will support
drives with up to 16 read/write heads and 2048 cylinders. Each drive
may be a different configuration. With the 2, 7 RLL encoding feature
of the WD1003A-RA2, up to 50% more data can be compacted onto a
certified RLL hard disk drive using a 26 sectors per track format.
NOTE
DO NOT USE THE WD1003A-RA2 WITH MFM TYPE HARD DISK DRIVES
Installation of the controller requires three steps: 1) verifying
jumper settings; 2) installing into the host computer; 3) formatting
the hard disk drives. To complete installation, you will need the
following:
Two hard disk cables (3 if using 2 hard disk drives); one 34 pin
floppy drive cable (a daisy chain type cable if using two floppy disk
drives); Winchester hard disk drive; floppy disk drive; screwdriver;
MSDOS Version 2.0 or later; IBM Advanced Diagnostic diskette (or
similar program for IBM compatibles); System Diagnostic Diskette (or
equivalent); FDISK and Format utility (normally included with MSDOS).
Preparation of Controller
WARNING
HANDLE THE CONTROLLER BY THE ENDS OF THE BOARD
SOME OF THE CHIPS ARE STATIC SENSITIVE AND DAMAGE
MAY OCCUR IF THE BOARD IS INCORRECTLY HANDLED
Before you can install your WD1003A-RA2, you will need to be certain
that the jumpers (small shorting plugs) are correctly set. Refer to
Table 1 for correct jumper settings. Modification of factory jumper
settings is rarely necessary. Modify jumpers only under the
direction of a qualified individual; i.e. your dealer.

Jumper Position Function
W1 1-2 This configuration used with a WD11C00C-22
at board location U16.
2-3 Required only onearly units with WD11C00-22
at board location U8 and W5 is jumpered 1 to
2. DO NOT JUMPER WITH WD11C00C-22
INSTALLED.
W2 1-2 Standard factory setting. No translation for
OPEN drive 0.
1-2 Enables translation for drive 0. Translation
CLOSED is only available for 615 cylinders and four
headed drives. In translation mode, the
controller translates the 26 physical
sectors per track into 17 sectors. The extra
sectors are "translated" into logical heads.
To use the translation mode, select through
the Setup program a 615 cylinder and six
head drive type. (This is drive type 3 for
IBM Personal Computer AT users. Not all AT-
compatible systems use the same drive tables
as IBM.) This configuration must be used
when running an operating system or applica-
tion program which requires a 17 sector per
track disk drive.
W2 3-4 Standard factory setting. No tranlation
OPEN Drive 1.
3-4 Enables Drive 1 translation
CLOSED
W3 3-4 Standard factory setting. DO NOT OPEN.
1-2 Standard factory setting. DO NOT OPEN.
W4 3-5 Standard factory setting. Selects primary
addresses, 1F0 through 1F7 hex, for the
hard disk controller. Do not modify the
primary address jumper unless your operating
system is configured to accept more than two
hard disk drives. Also verify that W4
positions 4 and 6 are connected, if 3 and 5
are jumpered.
4-6 Standard factory setting. Selects primary
addresses, 3F0 through 3F7 hex, for the
floppy disk controller. Do not modify the
primary address jumper unless your operating
system is configured to accept more than two
hard disk drives. Also, verify that W4 3
and 5 are connected, if 4 and 6 are
jumpered.
1-3 Selects secondary addresses 170 through 177
hex, for the hard disk controller. Also
verify that W4 2 and 4 are connected, if 1
and 3 are jumpered.
2-4 Selects secondary addresses, 370 through 377
hex, for the floppy disk controller. Also
verify that W4 1 and 3 are connected, if W4
2 and for are jumpered.
W5 1-2 Standard factory setting. Closed by etch on
the solder side of the board. Configures the
board to control drives with a maximum of
eight heads or Reduced Write Current (RWC).
2-3 Carefully cut etch and jumper to operate the
controller with hard disk drives having a
maximum of 16 heads.
W7 2-3 Standard factory setting. Supports 300 or
360 RPM floppy disk drives.
1-2 Supports dual speed spindle floppy drives.
Hardware Installation
WARNING
MAKE SURE COMPUTER IS TURNED OFF
AND POWER IS DISCONNECTED
1. Verify that your host computer has a 135 watt power supply. If
the disk drive(s) is(are) being installed internally, it is best to
locate the controller in the nearest available expansion slot to the
drive.
2. Remove the blank expansion slot bracket. Put the bracket away
and save it for possible future use. The screw will be used to hold
the new controller in place.
3. The terminating resistor must be present only on the last hard
disk drive connected. If there are two drives, the terminating
resistor must be present on the second drive. Verify proper setting
of drive select switches for drive select 1 or 2. Refer to your
system owner's manual for information about proper drive termination
and select switches.
4. Attach 34-pin control connector pin 1 to J4 on the controller
board. Make sure that Pin 1 of the cable connector goes to Pin 1 on
the controller board. Pin 1 of the cable connector is typically
located on the color coded side of the cable.
5. Connect control cable to drive.
6. Attach 20-pin data connector to J3 (Drive C or 0).
7. Attach 20-pin data connector to J2 (Drive D or 1).
8. Connect data cables to drives.
9. Attach 34-pin floppy cable connector to J5.
10. Attach Winchester activity LED connector to J1.
11. Install controller board into the expansion slot. Make sure that
the board is seated properly by pressing down on both ends of the
board. Secure the board with the bracket screw.
12. Remove or disable any other floppy controller in your system
when installing a WD1003A-RA2. It is NOT possible to disable the
floppy controller on the WD1003A-RA2.
CAUTION
WHEN ROUTING CABLES, BE CAREFUL NOT TO PINCH
THEM. CABLES MUST NOT GET CAUGHT BETWEEN THE
COVER AND THE BOARDS, NOR SHOULD THEY OBSTRUCT
ANY AIR FLOW PATH FROM FANS OR VENTS.
